Plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are key to making Europe’s food value chains more competitive, resilient and sustainable. While a vast majority of consumers is not confused by common names like “burger” and “sausage”, plant-based foods have come under attack in recent years by restricting the use of common names like “steak”, “ribs” or “beef style”.

We demand fair naming and labelling rules for plant-based foods in Europe. We advocate for clear food information on plant-based foods that

• enable businesses to promote innovative, healthy and sustainable products,
• strengthen food value chains in Europe and
• empower consumers to make healthier and more sustainable choices.

We give a voice to food manufacturers, food businesses  and civil society to speak up against restrictions of common-use terms for plant-based products that introduce unnecessary red tape, stifle innovation and harm farmers, manufacturers and consumers.

Time to end the “veggie burger” debate

We are part of the broad “NoConfusion” coalition that fights for fair naming and labelling rule. More than 600 businesses and civil society organisations have signed an open letter, defending common sense terms for plant-based foods.

Together with businesses and business networks, we urge policymakers to: 

• Reject proposals that would ban or restrict the use of familiar denominations for plantbased products. 
• Support transparent labelling that informs, rather than confuses or restricts, consumers.
• Promote innovation in the food sector by allowing fair competition and clear communication.

Plant-based alternatives, including alternatives to both meat and dairy, are a vital part of Europe’s agrifood systems. We stand ready to work with all stakeholders to ensure a competitive, fair, and transparent food system that supports innovation, sustainability, and consumer choice.
